How does Masterworks work?

1

Masterworks selects the artists: Masterworks’ research team uses art market data to select the artist’s markets they think have the most momentum or historical prestige. Masterworks selects blue-chip artists with strong historical price growth or long-term appreciation potential, like Basquiat, Banksy, and Picasso.

2

They oversee the purchase of the art: The acquisitions team locates what they believe is a good piece with an attractive value, and Masterworks coordinates the purchase of it.

3

The art offering is broken into shares: Masterworks files an offering circular with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) featuring each artwork, and then break that offering into shares.  This is how Masterworks is able to offer pieces worth millions of dollars to their investors, at a fraction of that cost.

4

They hold the painting: Masterworks aims to hold for 3-10 years to let it appreciate, then sell it (although some works of their 450+ offerings have sold earlier).

Data based on repeat-sales index of historical Post-War & Contemporary Art market prices and S&P 500 annualized return (includes dividends reinvested) from 1995 to 2024, developed by Masterworks. There are significant limitations to comparative asset class data. Indices are unmanaged and a Masterworks investor cannot invest directly in an index.

Art sales price data is comparative only. Each painting is unique and historical data is not a direct proxy for any specific painting or investment.  Data represents whole art not an investment into our offerings which includes fees and expenses.  Any comparative images are not currently live offerings and are provided for educational purposes only.
